Ever wonder why, even among close friends and family members, giving someone YOUR interpretation of Scripture rarely comes to a pleasant agreement; and often leads to bitter feelings and resentment? Speaking on ones interpretation of Scripture rocks the very skeleton of those who hear it; as it should. It's power is scary; and if misused or misunderstood, can cause tremendous damage to a relationship; regardless of how close it is thought to be.
Add to this, throughout history, every major religion ( through nation states) has used THEIR interpretation of Scripture to justify the use of violence and other un-Godlike behaviors. Why is interpreting Scripture so problematical? If the Word of God is true, and I for one am CERTAIN that it is, then why such dangerous and potentially catastrophic disagreements between people over what it means? Why is the curing of souls moving more and more away from the churches and into the hands of psychiatrists? What is at play here? What does the future hold on these issues? Will they finally march us irrevocably into the end of times?

Found your blog on twitter. I had 2 thoughts, for my 2 cents:
(1) At the temptation of Christ, the Devil misquoted Scripture to keep Him from going to the Cross.
(2) Looking at the entire Word, seeing where it comments on itself, taking it in context with to whom, when, & where it was written to/for, there is not that much disagreement.
God Bless ....
A few things:
First, I'd like to thank you ever so much for taking the time to respond. I am deeply moved.
Second, your opinion is not just 2 cents worth. I consider it very important and very meaningful.
Third, Let us agree to disagree. I strongly feel that there is immense disagreement on what the Word of God means. It is a major reason for much of the world's violence. Even you and I will disagree; and we are friends!!! :)
Blessings and thanks again!
I don't disagree with your observations of the symptoms of violence, but I have a different view of the root cause. James 4, this chapter sees violence as desire/taking what we have no right to have. Religion is just an excuse. And like many people are misquoted for twisted purposes, so is God misquoted in the excuse for violence.
Also, what Jesus said were the greatest commandments - Loving God with all your heart, soul, & mind & your neighbor as yourself, includes tolerance and excludes violence. When asked who was our neighbor, Jesus told the parable for the Good Samaritan. Samaritans in those days were despised for holding to the "wrong religion" and disagreeing on interpretation of the Old Testament. In spite of that, Jesus immortalized some of them in examples of godliness.
Gosh, I could a book about this.
Enjoy your tweets.

Blessings to you!!!!
