The peacock’s beautiful tail.

Here’s how the legend goes:

Hera, the wife of the greatest of gods known as Zeus was jealous of a beautiful nymph named Io who had won the heart and affection of Zeus on many occasions. To punish her, she turned Io into a heifer and had her brother Argus Panoptes to guard her.

Now, according to the legend, Argus was a giant of a man with a hundred eyes of which no more than fifty would ever be closed to sleep at any one time. He was therefore ever watchful.

Zeus decided to send Hermes to her rescue.  Hermes, inventor of the lyre, played dreamy music before Argus and put to sleep all hundred eyes. He then cut off the head of Argus and gave it to Hera who in turn placed all hundred eyes in the tail of her favorite pet: the peacock!
